I like to watch the Discovery Channel's Cash-Cab show for several reasons, one of which is the amazing insight you can get into the personal and family dynamics of a few individuals taking a 10-minute cab-ride in Manhattan.

Because it's a highly competitive situation (they answer trivia questions and receive or lose money according to how much they know) people tend to show more of their emotional weirdness than they would in more ordinary circumstances, but what amazes me the most - each time I watch it - is how incredibly different men and women are! For instance:

men tend to be cooperative and very supportive of each other, while women tend to confuse, disparage, and sabotage each other.

men almost immediately distribute their winnings (which one of them receives in cash) among all the other people they hailed that cab and played that game with, while women usually give their friends and/or relatives a token bill from the stash that was handed over to them, and, until challenged, try keep the rest for themselves.

men tend to remain calm and in control of their emotions, while women squeal, rage, yell, jump, shout, clap their hands, and permit themselves to get totally out-of-control.

most males seem to store about 10 times as much information in their brains, than most members of the female sex.

OTHER THAN THAT:

It seems like everybody in Manhattan is high-fiving everybody else in Manhattan, all the flocking time.....which gets really annoying!

BUT OTHER THAN THAT:

New Yorkers are incredibly alert, fun-loving, adventurous, and totally brilliant, well-informed human beings!

AND OTHER THAN THAT:

New York City is said to have 14,000 cabs.....all of which are bright orange Toyota vehicles with the ingenious invention of SLIDING DOORS......pretty damn cool!

Once a month, or so, I get my car washed by driving it through one of those 3-minute showers while playing my radio and munching on a snack from the healthfood store.

Once a year, or so, I take all my belongings out of my car, and have her cleaned, vacuumed, and washed inside-and-out, while I watch her getting serviced through the windowed wall that's at one entire side of the tunnel she's going through.

Last week, was once-a-year time.

When I arrived, a Latino guy seemed to have replaced the American owner who built the place about 5 years ago. He didn't understand a word of English, but smiled at me to indicate that he knew exactly what I wanted. (which, it turned out, he didn't)
Then he forgot to remove my antenna, so I did it myself. Inside the building, I could barely see my car starting out on its tunnel-trip, because the once-sparkling-clean windows were smudged with gray-black dirt, as were all the walls inside the tunnel.....so I figured these new owners weren't doing the re-cycling-job the way they were supposed to. While I walked along that dirty window-wall, I heard nothing but Spanish being spoken by the rest of the employees who were standing around flirting with a pretty Latino woman.
I noticed that no one was wearing the company uniforms the previous owner had bought for them......that all the rags being used were as filthy as the walls and windows of the tunnel......that the vehicles coming out of that tunnel, were smudged with dirt as well.

I suddenly felt like I wanted to get my car the hell out of there as fast as I could.

Which I did, while promising my little car that I'd never again take her back to that creepy filthy place.

Most Americans tend to become EAGLES, i.e. proud, independent, hardworking individuals who support beautiful towns.
